Goodbye and good riddance, February. A house has been dropped on your sorry ass.
Hello, March.
March 1 is only a date on the calendar, but I feel better knowing that February is over and done with. For me, March means good things:
My birthday is March 9. I can't wait to see all the lavish gifts my devoted blog readers and my pretend boyfriend George Clooney send my way.
The first day of spring is March 20.
St. Patrick's Day is March 17. I like the color green and four-leaf clovers and good luck and booze. I like jokes about leprechauns with punchlines that my brother, Tim, and I then turn into an inside joke that we repeat for years afterward.
The new season of Psych started last night and Community comes back March 15. Joy is now guaranteed for delivery each Wednesday night at 9 and Thursday night at 7. Multicultural bromances are my favorite thing.
It is true that I have been in a funk for the first two months of this year. I've been doing a lot of this:
"(Crying). Yeah. It's my new thing. I've gotten abnormally brilliant at it." - Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give.
I have an attitude problem. It's time to enact an attitude solution.
So I'm giving myself this blog challenge: Each day in March, I will write about a happy memory, something joyful from the past three-plus decades, maybe something from the past day or the past five minutes. These things may be big or small but they will all be things for which I am grateful.
Grandma and Cousin Edie |
Their lives were not perfect. They had more than their fair share of difficulties. But when I think of them, I think of people who chose every day to love one another. I think of people who chose happiness, who knew that it was rare and worth celebrating.
If I have a choice, I choose happiness.
Now here are some random quotes about happiness:
There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself. - Henry David Thoreau
Remember happiness doesn't depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely on what you think. - Dale Carnegie
What we call the secret of happiness is no more a secret than our willingness to choose life. - Leo Buscaglia
I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. - Gilbert K. Chesterton
My chick bad, My chick hood, My chick do stuff dat ya chick wish she could. - Ludacris.
Welcome to The Happiness Challenge
I hope as the month goes along that you'll drop by and share your happy memories with me.
If you have a blog, please feel free to start your own Happiness Challenge. My friend Stephanie started with this lovely post. Erin started with a wonderful tribute to the beauty of letter-writing. My cousin Richard began with a letter, too, and a photo that will make you squeal with happiness. It's that cute.
